Arts Development promotes the democratic development of various art forms in the province. This programme has been heightened through the establishment of the KwaZulu-Natal Arts and Culture Council which distributes grants to the relevant people or groups within the province. Such functions create opportunities for emerging and established artists, serving as a model for realizing the job creation potential the art sector has. This can be achieved through live performances and exhibitions, among other things.

The provincial Department has a grant-in-aid programme which aims to help mainly women and people living with disabilities. It does this by working with its regional offices which identify artists and organizations in their communities in need of assistance.

The Department already offers support to projects such as the KZN Arts and Culture Choral Festival, uShaka Marine live performances during the festive season, the Hilton Arts Festival and KZN African Film Festival.

We also have a culture exchange programme in place to promote our province’s rich heritage. The Osizweni Theatre production from Durban visited Bangkok in Thailand as part of a culture tour in April last year where KZN’s vibrant and entertaining isiZulu Traditional Dance, indlamu, was showcased.

The Department provides funding to cultural institutions such as the Playhouse and the KwaZulu Natal Philomena Orchestra, supported by comprehensive audience development strategies.
